Crotan Petra has a nice tropical look but is cold sensitive. They grow 2 to 4 feet tall & wide and are very colorful from spring through fall.
Crotan Mamey are similar to Crotan Petra with a more split leave. Very tropical looking.
Red Fountain Grass is popular for those wanting a beach look to their landscaping. Likes full sun to part shade, grows to 3 or 4 feet tall and wide and gets a 4 to 6 inch flume in mid summer to fall. Drought tolerant, once established.
Boxwood are a good evergreen for borders and dwarf hedges. They are slow growers and low maintenance also good for English gardens.

Brunsfelsia is also known as “Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow” for the pretty flowers they bloom are a different color each day; purple, pink & white. Grows to 4 to 6 feet tall & wide. Cold sensitive. A great accent hedge or conversation plant.
A very popular hedge plant is the Viburnum Odoratissimum, also known as “sweet viburnum”. A fast growing evergreen reaches 12 to 15 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide. Cold and drought tolerant once established.
Split Leaf Philodendron Selloum creates a tropical effect with the large deep lobed leaves and rich green color. Likes sun and shade and does well in pots or in the ground. Can grow to 8 to 10 feet tall & wide.
Can you smell it? The Grafted Gardenia flower has a strong, sweet smell and blooms spring to fall. The bush grows 4 to 6 feet tall and wide and is a cold tolerant evergreen.
Hawaiian Ti Red Sister looks great in containers by the pool. Reaching 3 to 4 feet tall, they look very tropical, but must be protected from the cold.
Verigated Shell Ginger will spice up the look of your landscape with it’s light tropical foilage. Reaching 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, it does well in containers and needs protection from cold.
Another good container plant is Fatsia. Can grow up to 6 feet tall and has tropical foilage, but needs to be protected from cold.
A perennial and popular gift plant is the Day Lilly. Ranging from about 6 inches to 2 feet tall and wide depending on variety. Blooms spring through fall, a pretty flower that depends on variety as well.
Thryallis will grow to 4 to 6 feet tall & wide and bloom yellow flowers spring through fall. Once established it is drought tolerant.
For a low maintenance and drought tolerant evergreen, Ilex Shillings may be your choice. Slow growing into a low mounding form they are also cold tolerant.
Indian Hawthorne is also popular for it’s low maintenance. It is cold and drought tolerant once established and blooms white flowers in spring and fall. They grow 2 to 4 feet tall and wide.
A Lorapetulum Tree is a pretty selection for a cold tolerant tree that reaches 6 to 8 feet tall. With purple foilage, new growth will bloom profusely spring through fall with a fuscia colored bloom.
An excellent ground cover is verigated Flax Lilly. At 4 to 8 inches tall, it is drought tolerant once established and the clumps can be divided and used as filler.
Podocarpus is a tough plant that makes a great privacy hedge or speciman. Reaching 12 to 15 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide, this evergreen is drought tolerant once established.
